Strong Black Woman

I am not a strong black woman.
I only have the power to be stretched thin
and not thinner like they say I should

I cry when I feel pressured
I crack in the face of adversity
I am not a mother of all nations
In fact, the thought of child bearing scares me

What makes a black woman strong?
Is she excellent in all that she does?
Does she have no emotions?
Is she ever smiling, even in suffering?

What makes a black woman strong?
I guess that I am not strong enough
to be black because
Tears flow easily from my eyes
And I am selfish

The world is not my child
I do not care for the entire village
I do not believe I could even care for
my entire home without once cracking

So, what is a strong black woman?

  1. I think the black woman has to project strength because if she shows her vulnerability the world eats her up. She must be all those things despite her weakness.
